In the heart of old Manila—amid the movement, color, and character of Quiapo—a story quietly began in 1968. It wasn’t just the start of a business, but the beginning of a lifelong mission: to celebrate Filipino craftsmanship, empower communities, and preserve a cultural legacy that would endure for generations.
What started as a small shop would soon grow into something far greater—rooted in love, driven by purpose, and shaped by the hands of Filipino artisans across the nation.
From a Small Shop to a Cultural Landmark
Before it became Balikbayan Handicrafts, it was simply known as Wooden Heart—a modest handicraft shop founded by Rita W. Cruz in Recto, Manila. Inspired by the spirit of the times and her entrepreneurial roots, she began by selling hand-carved wooden pieces that reflected the richness of Filipino artistry.
Not long after, together with her husband Juanito “Johnny” Cruz, the shop found a new home under the Quezon Bridge in Quiapo. What began as a small space soon expanded—first into two stalls, then into an entire three-story building with a warehouse at the back. It was here that Wooden Heart evolved into Balikbayan Handicrafts, marking the beginning of a legacy.
Rita managed the frontlines—sales, operations, and customer relationships—while Johnny traveled across the Philippines, discovering artisans, sourcing materials, and curating unique handcrafted pieces. This balance of vision and execution became the foundation of the brand.
Over the decades, Balikbayan Handicrafts grew beyond Quiapo, opening major stores in Makati and Parañaque—each housing thousands of square meters of carefully curated Filipino-made products. From towering hand-carved wooden sculptures and heirloom furniture to delicate shell crafts and woven textiles, every piece reflects the depth and diversity of Philippine culture.

Nagbabalik sa “Bayan”
The name Balikbayan carries deep meaning. It speaks of returning—of reconnecting with one’s roots, culture, and identity. For many Filipinos, especially those living abroad, it is both a word and a feeling: a longing for home.
Balikbayan Handicrafts embodies this spirit.
From the very beginning, the founders understood that their role extended beyond retail. They were storytellers, cultural stewards, and bridge-builders—connecting artisans from different regions to a wider audience, while preserving traditions that might otherwise fade.
Through decades of partnerships, Balikbayan Handicrafts has built a strong network of artisans, suppliers, and communities across the country. These relationships have not only ensured the authenticity and quality of each piece, but have also created sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of families.
In every sense, Balikbayan Handicrafts brings people back to the bayan—to heritage, to identity, and to the stories that define what it means to be Filipino.

Handicrafts and beyond
While craftsmanship remains at its core, Balikbayan Handicrafts has evolved into something much greater than a retail destination.
It is a platform for Filipino creativity.
A partner in community development.
A champion of cultural preservation.
For over five decades, the brand has expanded its offerings—from furniture and home décor to fashion pieces like Barongs, Filipinianas, and piña textiles, as well as jewelry crafted from pearls and natural materials. These products highlight the ingenuity of Filipino artisans and the richness of indigenous materials such as wood, bamboo, shells, fibers, and clay.
Behind every item is a story of collaboration—between designers and craftsmen, between tradition and innovation.
Balikbayan Handicrafts has also played a vital role in export and global trade, bringing Philippine handicrafts to international markets while maintaining a commitment to quality, authenticity, and ethical sourcing. Its operations—from manufacturing to shipping—are supported by skilled teams who ensure that each piece reaches its destination with care and integrity.
But perhaps its most enduring impact lies in its advocacy: uplifting communities, supporting local industries, and ensuring that Filipino craftsmanship continues to thrive in a modern world.
A Legacy That Continues
Today, Balikbayan Handicrafts stands as a testament to what passion, partnership, and purpose can build. From a small shop in Quiapo to a nationally recognized cultural brand, its journey is one of resilience, growth, and unwavering dedication to Filipino heritage.
And as it moves forward, it carries the same heart that started it all—
to honor the past, empower the present, and inspire the future.
Every piece tells a story. Every story brings us home.
